One of the greatest challenges in church-based counseling is the time lapse between someone wanting to become a counselor and getting to counsel. In most lay-based counseling models the time for training is at least 12 to 18 months, sometimes longer. How many people start this journey, strongly desiring to help others, but never finish? What if there was a way to responsibly shrink that delay?
Another way to state this challenge is that counselees do not graduate to become counselors. But that is how most ministries in a church replicate. What is the majority training for a small group leader? At most churches, 80% of the training is being a member of a small group and falling in love with what small groups provide. After that, you become a co-leader before the church adds a bit of training to emphasize some core values of their small groups and commission you to lead a small group. What if there was a way that a counseling ministry could replicate leaders in a similar fashion?
